Hearts Beat Loud

I have always been a fan of music based films. Not musicals themselves, but movies that are based around music.
The film centers around Sam (Kiersey Clemons) and Frank ( Nick Offerman). Sam is about ready to leave for college when one of their weekly jam session songs makes it huge on Spotify. The question becomes, what should be the next move?
My favorite thing about this film was the music of this film was the music. The film does have original music sung by Kiersey Clemons and Nick Offerman. I have always been a sucker for a film with great music. It is why I enjoy movies like "Begin Again" so much. While the songs were not as good, they were still well done.
One thing that I had found incredibly shocking about the film, was how familiar it was.  I know what you are thinking, if it is familiar, how could it be any good? To me, the story was told in such a way that rather than feeling boring. This was something that felt great to watch it. I would go as far as to say it is my feel good movie of the year so far.  Something that helped this was the performances of Nick Offerman and Kiersey Clemons. On top of that, the chemistry they had in their scenes together is some of the best I have seen so far this year.
Final thing, I was glad to see a movie that did more than imply someone is gay. Sam is a lesbian in the film and does more than dance around the subject. It is good for a movie to do that, when most don't do more than casually mention it. I just find it dumb if you off handily mention it once, than never using it. If you are not going to use it. Point being, good job for using it.
If I had to pick one thing that, in fact bugged me about the film, it was the editing. There was a lot of fast cuts through it that seemed unnecessary. For example, the final concert scene in the film was cut so, much  that it took away from the power it should have had.
With the movie being familiar, but not in a bad way, Its just hard not to think too highly of this film.
