Equalizer 2
When it comes to action movies, they can always be hit or miss. When September of 2014 came around, and the original "Equalizer" dropped, I was not expecting a lot. What I got was something fun. Going into July 20th of this year I was pumped, to say the least when it came to what the sequel could be.
The new one starts some time after the events of the first film. Robert McCall (Denzel Washington) is making his way as a Lyft driver. He is also doing random "acts" to help everyone he can. Things change when his best friend, Susan Plummer (Melissa Leo) is murdered. This forces him to face the past he tried to leave behind.
The best thing to discuss about, really, any Denzel Washington movie is his performance. Even when the quality of the film is not always there. In this film, he is fantastic, I would even say better than the first.
With the "Equalizer", series there are a lot of longer shots that pan in whatever direction it needs to go. Whether it is to set up a fight scene, or the setting, it works.
When it came to the "Equalizer" series, it works on the fact that McCall is doing these things because it is the right thing to do. This time, it is all in the name of revenge for the murder of his friend. It does not work as well, for example, even in the movie, McCall, even says that he is not going to even give them the chance to do the right thing. This completely undoes the first one. I do not think it works.
When McCall realizes that he must face the past, there is not enough of a development of his past for things to really matter for me. It just goes straight to him kicking butt. Makes the potential, emotional punch of this film, loose its power.
It is not as good as the original, but Denzel saves it from being a disaster.
