A Babysitter's Guide to Monster Hunting

Image
The photo belongs to Netflix. I'm closing out the Halloween week with a fun family film.    Tamra Smart stars a Kelly, a teenager who  is recruited by a secret society. This society had to battle the Boogeyman and his monsters on Halloween.  The film is based off a book series that started in 2017 and is currently still expecting more. In my own personal taste, I usually can not stand a young adult adaptation. With the string of these adaptations hitting theaters over the last fifteen years, a good portion of them were horrible. How will this adaptation work?     The story is a lot of fun. Maybe, the trick to get something at least fun out of a young adult adaptation, is to get the original author to adapt their own work. The man in this case, is Joe Balarini. I think that if anything, he made it fun. I do sometimes have trouble with films  when it seems like I have seen something a million times. I am always told to look for the creati

Halloween 1978

This is a photo that belongs to Compass International Pictures. I have made it to the 1978 original, the one I watch every year, on Halloween. (For the irony)   In 1963, Michael Myers kills his older sister on Halloween. Fifteen years later he escapes the mental hospital, and  comes home wanting to kill again.  This is an iconic film in so many ways, probably much more than one could even count. This film is what started it all in the slasher genre. The film was shot for three hundred thousand dollars and makes forty- seven million in the United  States. So, in the year of 1978, that was a huge hit. It is still considered one of the most successful independent films ever made. One could see why they would want to continue in any way they could. What I get behind in this story, is it's simplicity. I do not  think that it is trying to show off, or be something that it isn't. There is a

The Wolf of Snow Hollow

Image
This photo belongs to Orion Classics. This was a film that came out in limited release this year over the pandemic. Movies like that, do not generally catch my attention. For some reason I just decided that I had to watch this trailer. It stuck with me, to the point when I saw it on Amazon today, my curiosity got the best of me.   The small town of Snow Hollow has multiple bodies start to pile up during several consecutive full moons. Police officer John Marshal (Jim Cummings) is losing sleep, raising a teenage daughter, and caring for his ailing father.  Marshall struggles to remind himself there's no such thing as werewolves, no matter how much the evidence says otherwise.    I do want to high light a few of the performances of the film. This does happen to be the final film of Robert Foster. Foster plays Marshal's father, and the town sheriff. He has been in many great films through out hi

Truth Seekers Season 1

Image
Photo belongs to Sony television and Amazon Studios. From when I was a young teenager, until well, now I have always  looked at the team of Simon Pegg and Nick Frost as comedy gold. "Shaun of the Dead", "Hot Fuzz" and "At World's End" are pure gold, even the less enjoyed "Paul" are great. When I heard they had teamed up to create a new show, I was pumped.   The story revolves around a  team of part-time paranormal investigators that use homemade gizmos to track the supernatural. They share their adventures with a small YouTube. The scares start out small but get more more terrifying they begin to uncover something bigger than they imagined.   My absolute favorite part of this show is Malcolm McDowell. He plays the father- in law of Nick Frost's character Gus. His I am an old man, I get to say what I want works. The unfortunate thing about that is neither Frost or Pegg are very funny.  So

The Mandalorian Season 2 Episode 1

Image
The photo is property of disney pictures. So, one of the biggest streaming shows of all times returns! You may ask, well how was this first episode, well let us take a look! I will try to reveal as little as possible for those of you that care.   My biggest issue with the show so far has been the lack of a strong central story. Nothing made me care about the characters. I will say that towards the end of season one it got better when we started to know more about who the mandalorian was. This season picks up with the Mandalorian (Pedro Pascal) on the lookout for more of his kind. His plan is to rendezvous with his fellow kind to bring the kid home. This plan gets him back to Tatoine. He runs into Cobb Vanth (Timothy Olyphant). The surprise of the episode is the armor hes wearing.    The best thing of this episode, frankly the entire show was the effects. They are so good in fact I would say that at times it trumps the movies. I wo

Holidate

Image
This is a picture that belongs to Netflix. This is actually the first Netflix romantic comedy that I have watched. So it is easy to say that I had no idea what to expect.     The story surrounds  Sloane (Emma Roberts) and Jackson (Luke Bracey). The  pair hate being single on holidays  because of the  constant judgment from their families. So, when these two strangers meet, they pledge to be each other's "holidate" for every festive occasion in the year ahead.    I have to admit that I was not expecting great things. I was kind of surprised. I went into this not expecting it to be, as well, R - rated as it was. I think the feeling that it was more grown up helped. There were actually several times where I laughed out loud.      Performances in the film seemed like they had fun. I did feel like there was a chemistry between Roberts and Bracey that really helped to sell the movie. Kristen Chenoweth, who plays Aunt Susan is a stand

Piranha 1978

Image
This photo is the property of New World Pictures. As someone born in the late 80's, movies generally that came before my birth were not presented to me very often. I have to go out and find the winners on my own. My take tonight is on the 1978 cult film "Piranha".     The story is a rather simple one, super genetic piranha have been released from a lab. Would you know what is next to this lab? That's correct, a giant tourist town!   I hate to admit it, with the giant list of credits of the  mega producer Roger Corman, this is only the second movie of his I have seen, after the "Death Race" remake. Through the many channels that YouTube has to offer, I have learned about his films, and what they are known for. I will say this right off the bat, this was not what I had expected.    This was one of the first films of famed director Joe Dante. For those that don't know, from this he goes on to direct th

A Look Back: Silent Hill Revelation 3D

Image
Photo is the property of Open Road Pictures. With my string of horror films, I thought why no take on a video game adaptation. How bad could it be?    The story picks up several years after the original, Heather Mason (Adelaide Clemens) and her father, Harry (Sean Bean), have been on the run. On the eve of Heather's 18th birthday, she disc overs that she is not who she thinks she is.    Before we get into the negative, which, well is a lot, how about the positive. The monster design of the film are top notch. With there being a lot computer graphic imagery in this film, it is surprising how good they look.     Now, onto the bad side. The overall story is a mess from top to bottom. The overall story is supposed to be a direct sequel to the 2006 movie, The problem with this is writer MJ Basset  wanted to coarse correct towards the game series. This does make the movies lack direction. The characters are very one dimensional, to the point wh

Bad Hair

Image
Image belongs to Hulu. This is something that I was curious to try and  be able to review a movie about evil hair.   The story takes place  in 1989, where  a woman (Elle Lorraine), gets a weave in order to succeed. So Her exploding career, turns out, comes at cost because, evil hair.    The film is written and directed by Justin Simien. He is creator of the popular "Dear White People" series and film. So, as silly as the premise seems, one would expect something great from this.    This is one of those types of movies that can be seen in two different ways. There is the obvious, evil hair, What do we do? With movies like this tough, you are always looking for the secret meaning. This is a workplace drama. When it comes to workplace, especially thirty- one years ago, you come to workplace discrimination. What is the best way to put yourself above others? You obviously beautify yourself. After watching the film, does this met

A Look Back: Oculus

Image
This still is the the property of Blumhouse pictures. I think for this post I will go all in and do full spoilers on this post. This movie is six and a half years old, so you have had time.  When the Russell's move into their new home, things are going great. It is a happy loving family, until the mirror was brought into the house. The mirror torments the parents past the brink of insanity. The children are there for the unfortunate ride. It takes two weeks for the mirror to take the parents.      Flash forward, the son, Tim (Brenton Thwaites) is leaving a mental hospital, for what turns out to be, the murder of his parents ( Katee Sackhoff and Rory Cochrane).   His sister, Kaylie (Karen Gillian) is set to prove that it was, in fact the mirror that killed their parents. Now, it will get difficult to explaine what happens in detail but here is an overview. Kaylie and Tim head back to their childhood home. While there it flashes back

The Undoing: Episode 1

Image
Picture is the property of HBO. With my return to the world of reviews, I thought why not take on something  a little more relevant.      The series comes from the TV mega man David E Kelly, the creator of such greats as The Practice, Boston Legal, and Big Little Lies. The series stars Nicole Kidman, Hugh Grant, Edgar Ramirez, and Donald Sutherland.     Grace and Jonathan Fraser ( Nicole Kidman and Hugh Grant), live an upper class life in New York. Their son goes to a high end school. What could possibly go wrong?      The biggest thing that comes from the episode are the performances. Kidman and Grant knock it out of the park. Honestly coming from a show like "Big Little Lies", I would expect nothing less from such a creator.   I was a big fan of the music used in the episode. It took a very classical approach. I think that it really adds to this is high class society feel.  The story is where things get a little dic

A Look Back: Fright Night 1985

Image
I state this as always I do not own the rights to this, they belong to Columbia pictures. I should say this is really not a look back, I first actually saw this movie yesterday. I have been well versed in the 2011 version with the late great Anton Yelchin. That was a fun film. I have to say, my expectations for this were a little low. The track record for 80's horror is spotty at best, so why would this be any different.      The story revolves around Charley Brewster (William Ragsdale) living a seemingly normal teenage life. What happens when a vampire ( Chris Sarandon) moves in next store? Do you ignore it or do you fight?    I think, out of everything, what stood out to me, that stood out, was the performances. This movie had to be horror but have comedic elements. I think that across the board it works. I think were it truly shines is from Chris Sarandon (Jerry Dandridge) and Roddy McDowall (Peter Vincent).  Dandridge is, n
