Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Theives

Image
Photo Property of paramount pictures.        I had huge reservations about this film, before I saw any of the actual footage. For any of you that say well that's not fair to do that to a film. Do yourself a favor and watch the 2000 film of the same name. I'll wait...... You're welcome!!        The story revolves around a thief (Chris Pine) as he embarks on an epic quest to retrieve a lost relic with his friends. Things get a little crazy, when they run into the wrong crowd.           The film comes from the minds of Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daily. These are the guys behind " Game Night".  They were also the writers behind "Spiderman: Homecoming" and "Horrible Bosses". The dialogue of the films makes them a joy to watch. The streak continues here, the dialogue is so entertaining and fun to listen to. There are a lot of laugh out loud moments throughout this film. The best part is, this can be a lot of fun for people that have never pl

Cocaine Bear

Image
Photo is property of Universal Pictures       The time has finally come! The cocaine bear is unleashed!! The story revolves around a group of cops, criminals, tourists and kids converge on a Georgia forest. A huge black bear goes on a murderous rampage after unintentionally ingesting cocaine. What more can you ask for!    Elizabeth Banks had an interesting start to her career as a director. With her star on "Pitch Perfect 2", it was a huge hit. When "Charlie's Angles" came out it seemed make or break moment. As we all know, it bombed terribly. In 2023 she has gotten another chance,    The plot is simple. A whole bunch of cocaine gets dropped in the forest. A black bear finds it and eats it. The biggest thing you have to get your head around, it this is not a movie to be taken seriously. Not that it is not that its a bad movie. It is a silly concept, that you could have a lot of fun if you let your mind run with it. If you can, this movie is fun.   The ability

Bunker

Image
Photo is property of Blue Fox Entertainment  This was a rather tough one to wrap my head around, mostly because of a bad theatrical experience.  This is a simple story. A group of soldiers get trapped in a bunker where sinister forces maybe lurking. This was something that relies on relationships of the people stuck in the bunker. I do think that that most of them not knowing each other and being on opposite sides, made the stakes of this film pointless. This is another review that I have given thought to. This is an ending that needs to be spoiled. When the angel of war comes, it does not feel earned. Adding a monster to the end of this when the majority of the film was about a group of people enclosed together didn't feel necessary. By the end you have the angel, and it just doesn't feel like it works.   On the technical side, this is a very cheap movie, and it shows. Watching this right after "All Quiet on the Western Front", makes judging the technical side diff

All Quiet on the Western Front

Image
Photo Property of Netflix    "All quiet on the western front" was a saying during war times meaning lack of change. This is the perfect name to describe the hostile, scary war environment.      The story revolves around Paul (Felix Kammerer)  is a seventeen-year-old that les to get into the German army. Most kids at the time wanted a way out, they thought that the army was that chance. It was a rude  awakening most did not see coming.     Several films throughout 2022 were atmosphere films. They were able to create a good atmosphere, but fail to create a good story, or plot. This film is somewhere in the middle of this. You do get Paul and his friends happy and excited to join the army, which quickly turns to shit. At the same time there are several Germán officials negotiating the surrender of the Germans to the French. With a run time of 168 minutes there is a lot of time to fill. Unfortunately, there is not mu

The Pope’s Exorcist

Image
I love religious based horror. The problem is there is too many bad examples of these films, these days. ("Prey for the Devil" and "Devil Conspiracy" among the most recent) Things like "The Exorcist" and "The Exorcism of Emily Rose" give me hope, even when I have been hurt so many times.    It has Russel Crowe in a rated R horror movie. On top of that it is directed by Julius Avery, the man who did "Overlord". Sold! Checkout the trailer above! It hits theaters April 14th.

My Year of Dicks

Image
Photo belongs to FX   I was in that group of people that was laughing when we all heard the name of this film. How could anyone take this title seriously?  Pam, at the age of 15, decides its tie to lose her virginity. She thinks that it will make her the grown up that she feels she should be. Over the course of 26 minutes, we see her attempts to try to accomplish this.    This did top my expectations. The animation is beautiful. It varies on animation styles throughout depending on what is going on in the story. The story is a lot deeper than I expected. The story is just about growing up. It really is about expectations vs reality. Everyone could identify with this story in some way. That is the sign of good writing. This does make me want to go the source material.  Moral of the story: Don't judge a book by its cover! GRADE:A

Magic Mike's Last Dance

Image
Photo belongs to Warner Brothers Discovery   The final dance has arrived!!! Can Magic mike bring the sexy back? It's been eight years since XXL, so let's find out.   Mike Lance (Channing Tatum), is broke following a business deal that went bust, leaving him broke. Mike heads to London with a wealthy socialite (Salma Hayek) who lures him with an offer he can't refuse.  This is a very stylized movie in the way that it does its dancing. About halfway through the film there is a scene on a bus that looks fluid and beautiful. It reminded me of a "Step Up" movie. I think that it misses the grittiness that really should go along with stripping. All the way to the show he has at the theater, again feels like I am watching a Step-Up movie. This is no to say it doesn't look good. Director Steven Soderbergh is a master of the camera, and it shows.  I think where it truly backslides is the story. Magic mike is down on his luck, lost his business during the pandemic. Whe

Marlowe

Image
Picture belongs to Open Road Pictures  We have come to the 100th film of a Mr. Liam Neeson. He started way back in 1978 with "Pilgrims Progress". To still be in the business, after all that time, is no small feat.   This film revolves around Marlowe (Liam Neeson), a private detective in Bay City California. One day, an heiress (Diane Kruger) walks in his office to find her missing lover.        With a small film, such as this if you can get a good cast that is always something to celebrate. This film graces us with Liam Neeson, Diane Kruger, Jessica Lange, Allan Cumming, and Danny Huston. These are all excellent gets. My guess would be they wanted to work with the legendary director Niel Jordan, for those unaware of his career here are a few: "Cryng Game", "Interview with a Vampire", and "Michael Collins". I would want to be there too.   Hands down, the best part of this movie is the set design, granted was not alive in the 30's but the att

The Flash Super Bowl Trailer #1 (2023)

Image
I am going to say something strange, something that I would never thought I would say. I am very excited for a DCEU movie!!   Why is this? Well, multiple timelines, duh!  Multiple Batman's (Ben Affleck and Michael Keaton) and Multiple Barry's! I do hope that the hype does not overshadow the movie itself. It's a lot to expect from something that is supposed to rewrite the entire universe. The film opens June 16th.

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny - Official Big Game Trailer (2023)...

Image
I have been an Indiana Jones my entire life. When "Crystal Skull" came out in 2008 I was very excited. To tell you all the truth, I liked the film. Few things have interested about this. I am interested in what this movie will be like not being directed by Steven Speilberg. James Mangold, the director of "logan" has taken over. I am wondering if the tone will be. I am a huge Mads Mikkelson has been a favorite villain actor of mine since "Casino Royale". I am super excited to see him as an Indy villain. "Indy 5" comes out June 30.

Transformers: Rise of the Beasts - Official Teaser Trailer (2023) Anthon...

I am scared to actually admit this. Im looking forward to this! I am interested in what new leading man Anthony Ramos will bring to this. Bumblbee was pretty good. Lets build on it! Transformers: Rise of the Beasts opens June 9.

Consecration

Image
Photo is property of IFC and Shudder        I was mentioning the other day to a friend that I am usually a fan of religious horror films. I do set the bar high, with "The Omen" and "The Exorcist". How does this hold up?      After the death of her brother, Grace (Jenna Maolne) travels to a convent where he fell to his death. Distrusting the Church's account, she uncovers murder and sacrilege.        I have now sat on this film for a few days, trying to really place how I felt about it. I think my struggle with it, was it was too convoluted for its own good. There is a simple story of a woman going to collect her brother's things. This works and is simple. When you add on layer after layer and twist after twist, things get messy. Doing these things cheapens your overall story. The things that are supposed to be creepy, by the end, are just frustrating.  What makes t more frustrating, was there are individ

FAST X FAST AND FURIOUS 10 Trailer (NEW 2023)

Image
Hello friends of the internet!!! Today we have received the first trailer for "Fast X" This continues the long popular franchise from 2001. We are now coming towards the end of an almost 25-year story. My question: How can you top going to space? This one adds "Aquaman" star Jason Mamoa as the villain of this installment. What are his motivations? I know that we all can't wait to find out.   The film hits theaters May 19!

Mindcage

Image
Image belongs to Lionsgate Films    People of the internet I am here. Coming back from a week off, I am taking aim at a film that did a split between theaters and on demand. Does that make it good or bad?     When a copycat murderer strikes, Detectives Jake Doyle (Martin Larwrence) and Mary Kelly (Mellissa Roxburgh) seek help from an incarcerated serial killer called the Artist (John Malkovich) . Mary delves deep into the Artist's twisted mind, she and Jake get lured into a game of cat and mouse, racing against time to stay a step ahead of both criminals.     This movie is boring, comes from many reasons, but mainly the cast just look like they do not want to be in this movie. Martin Lawrence is a great comedic actor, except for this movie is usually so much fun to watch. John Malkovich, who is just nuts in movies like "RED", was just flat here. Everyone being so bland takes this movie down.  I am going to go a little di

Women Talking

Image
Photo belonged to MGM pictures           Here we are, another Oscar nominated film!  Let's discuss!!     This is my first dive into the directing world of Sarah Polley. I have always been told that her films were great, and I just never got to them. I had seen a few of her acting jobs. This had me curious.     Two things together make this movie excellent. Sarah Polleys script is sharp and well written. for a movie that mostly takes place in a barn. With a run time of 104 minutes, you have a lot of work to do with not much there. She makes you care about the characters and hate what has happened all at the same time, it has an Oscar nomination for a Best Adapted Screenplay. Can it win? Well, I have yet to see "Living" and "All Quiet on the Western Front". If I had to judge, based on what I have seen, it has a chance. The dialogue is amazing, would say it is the best part of this film.    The only way Polley could get her screenplay out there is with the help of

Classics Review: Groundhog Day

Image
Photo belongs to Paramount pictures          Happy Groundhog Everyone!  I thought it be fun to take a look at the 1993 classic film.      This film is notoriously the last team up of director Harold Ramis and star Bill Murray. Together they did "Stripes" and the "Ghostbusters" film. A fourth film seemed like a no brainer. Stories from the set were not pleasant. Bill Murray really did not like the film. He hated the overall tone of the film. He thought the tone was not right. He thought it should contemplate one's existence. It did not go the way that he wanted, so he made people's lives hell on set. It was reported that Murray was also concerned with the fact that people thought he was only good in Harrold Ramis movies. To top it all off Murray was going through a divorce during filming. It's hard to believe that a movie like this was so unpleasant.  For those

Sea Beast

Image
Image property of Netflix  Here it is. my start of the watching of Oscar movies I have not seen. What a better way to star than in the category of Best Animated Feature. I was told this was a great film, so, let's get started.   When a young girl stows away on the ship of a legendary sea monster hunter, they launch an epic journey into uncharted waters - and make history to boot.   Before I had watched this, I became aware of the movie's nomination for best FX at the upcoming Annie awards. This set an expectation that I was sure was not going to deliver. The forest and the water were something beautiful. In every scene the effects pop.  I was also a big fan of the monsters, especially the crab monster. I think that effects, is what would make this rewatchable.    What really hurts me in this it feels like I have watched this way too many times before. This feels like an outright rip-off of "How to train your Dragon"

PokerFace Episodes 1 to 4

Image
Photo is property of Universal Pictures      I am going to sell you this show right here, right now! Rian Johnson is doing a murder mystery. How did I do? Does t have your curiosity?      Charlie (Natash Lyonne) has the gift of being able to determine when someone is lying. After the murder of her friend, she hits the road, at every stop she meets a new characters and crimes she can't help but investigate and solve. Without getting a whole lot into the plot of each episode, we'll talk about my favorite. The setup for this whole show is great. Charlie works as a cocktail waitress in the Frost Casino. Her friend gets murdered, she's on the run. What helps this show is the writing of Johnson.  Like with "Knives Out" and the more recent "Glass Onion" we see his gift for writing the wacky characters. In the pilot he, writes Charlie to be down but not out. You want to see what happens to her. Wi

Infinity Pool

Image
Picture is property of Neon Pictures     I have sat on this film for a few days. i have just had the darndest time trying to sort out how I felt about this. Please bear with me while I try.      James and Em Foster (Alexander Skarsgard and Cleopatra Coleman) are enjoying an all-inclusive beach vacation when incident exposes the resort's perverse subculture of hedonistic tourism, reckless violence and surreal horrors.   This was another movie, that was about the rich and what they can get away with. What changes it from "Triangle of Sadness" and "The Menu", is this crank up the sadistic way it approaches its message. If you know the Cronenberg way, should not be surprised where this film takes you as a viewer.  Without giving anything away, I think what sells me on this is the end of the film. It does not follow the normal route these films take.  GRADE:B+

Fear

Image
Property of Hidden Empire Pictures When I first heard of this movie, I thought it was the one from 1996, starring everyone's favorite mark Wahlberg and Reese Whitherspoon. Hmmmmm wrong.      Premise is simple, Things get a little weird for friends on a weekend getaway.  I say that like that's what the movie is about. Gong much further, could go into spoilers. As you fine people know I try to avoid at all costs. It is my job to watch and talk about these movies. At the end of the day I always wat you to make your own decision on anything that comes out.     This movie's biggest fault is the pacing. The film clocks in at a modest one hundred minutes. The problem, being it felt double it. Throughout this film there is nothing that moves it forward. There is not a single thing that happens for the first hour and twenty. By the end comes around, you lose interest in whatever is going on.      On top of the pacin

That 90s Show season 1

Image
I was prime age for "That 70's Show". I used to watch that show every week while it was on. I think the key to the show, was the dynamic. They got it perfectly in every sense, and the best part was the chemistry between them all make it all work. That was until Josh Myers..... but we aren't here for that discussion.    When it came out that an actual sequel series was coming, I was ecstatic. Even more when it was revealed to be led by Red ( Kurtwood Smith) and Kitty ( Debra Jo Rupp). Eric and Donna's daughter Leia (Calie Haverda) comes to live with her grandparents for the summer. Leia meets Gwen ( Ashley Aufderheide) next door, and the adventures ensue!      For a show like this to work it needs to rely heavily on the nostalgia on multiple levels. It has got to give you as much of what you love about the original show. Kurtwood Smith and Debra Jo Rupp do take care of most of it. It feels like the show never ended. They did not seem to need time to find t
