Life of the Party

It seems like every two years we get a Melissa McCarthy movie directed by her husband Ben Falcone. In 2014 we got "Tammy", in 2016 we got "The Boss", and now in 2018  we get "Life of the Party". One thing the first two films have in common is the lack of quality, unfortunately. So does this new one change things?
In this film, McCarthy stars as Deanna, a newly divorced mother of a college student. She is looking for something that will reinvigorate her life, but what to do? Why not join her daughter for their senior year together?
To me, I feel the biggest thing that works for this film, the chemistry between McCarthy and Mollie Gordon was strong. Gordon played her daughter in the film. Throughout the film, it was the thing that was the strongest, and most believable.
When it comes to the negatives I have with the film, comes from the script.  To start, this movie is really suppose to be about the empowerment of women. There are several moments through the film that hints at it but it loses focus in things like having sex with young college men.
This film also falls into the same issues both "Tammy" and "The boss" fell into. The movie tries a lot to to be funny, and most of the time it doest work even a little.
If I had to say anything else about the movie I could say that the camera angles of many of the shots in the film were a bit questionable.
In the end,  is this a good movie? No, not particularly.   But, this is a decent improvement for the husband and wife duo.
