All Quiet on the Western Front

"All quiet on the western front" was a saying during war times meaning lack of change. This is the perfect name to describe the hostile, scary war environment.

The story revolves around Paul (Felix Kammerer) is a seventeen-year-old that les to get into the German army. Most kids at the time wanted a way out, they thought that the army was that chance. It was a rude  awakening most did not see coming.

Several films throughout 2022 were atmosphere films. They were able to create a good atmosphere, but fail to create a good story, or plot. This film is somewhere in the middle of this. You do get Paul and his friends happy and excited to join the army, which quickly turns to shit. At the same time there are several Germán officials negotiating the surrender of the Germans to the French. With a run time of 168 minutes there is a lot of time to fill. Unfortunately, there is not much else to it. The one thing that was interesting to me was the character of Paul. With the lack of real plot, it was impressive the ability the film has to get you to care about him.

It does seem like when it comes to all war movies, they have something in common. This film continues the trend of being shot incredibly well. This drops you in the middle of these bunkers and it feels lke you are there. This could also be a testament to the quality of the sound design and editing. There are many wide shots that put you right in it. On a technical level, this is where the film shines.

This is an experience that needs be seen if you are a fan of war films.
