I was mentioning the other day to a friend that I am usually a fan of religious horror films. I do set the bar high, with "The Omen" and "The Exorcist". How does this hold up?
After the death of her brother, Grace (Jenna Maolne) travels to a convent where he fell to his death. Distrusting the Church's account, she uncovers murder and sacrilege.
I have now sat on this film for a few days, trying to really place how I felt about it. I think my struggle with it, was it was too convoluted for its own good. There is a simple story of a woman going to collect her brother's things. This works and is simple. When you add on layer after layer and twist after twist, things get messy. Doing these things cheapens your overall story. The things that are supposed to be creepy, by the end, are just frustrating. What makes t more frustrating, was there are individual things in this movie that do work. Don't be too smart for your own good!
There were some interesting editing choices through this film. Most of the time, when there is an editing issue, you feel like you have seen something weird and move on. Not one time in this entire movie, can the editing come together between a green screen and not a green screen shot. The speed of both shots was not the same and really through off the scene.
Even with Jenna Malone giving it her all it does not quite save this.
