Sea Beast

Here it is. my start of the watching of Oscar movies I have not seen. What a better way to star than in the category of Best Animated Feature. I was told this was a great film, so, let's get started.
When a young girl stows away on the ship of a legendary sea monster hunter, they launch an epic journey into uncharted waters - and make history to boot.
Before I had watched this, I became aware of the movie's nomination for best FX at the upcoming Annie awards. This set an expectation that I was sure was not going to deliver. The forest and the water were something beautiful. In every scene the effects pop. I was also a big fan of the monsters, especially the crab monster. I think that effects, is what would make this rewatchable.
What really hurts me in this it feels like I have watched this way too many times before. This feels like an outright rip-off of "How to train your Dragon". We have these monsters all around us. They are evil, or are they? The father character is a hardened stubborn person that could never change. Point being, you watch either movie you are getting the same story. From Chris Williams, one of the writers of "Moana", I expected more.
I think this movie is a mixed bag: Great animation, bad writing.
