That 90s Show season 1
I was prime age for "That 70's Show". I used to watch that show every week while it was on. I think the key to the show, was the dynamic. They got it perfectly in every sense, and the best part was the chemistry between them all make it all work. That was until Josh Myers..... but we aren't here for that discussion.
When it came out that an actual sequel series was coming, I was ecstatic. Even more when it was revealed to be led by Red ( Kurtwood Smith) and Kitty ( Debra Jo Rupp). Eric and Donna's daughter Leia (Calie Haverda) comes to live with her grandparents for the summer. Leia meets Gwen ( Ashley Aufderheide) next door, and the adventures ensue!
For a show like this to work it needs to rely heavily on the nostalgia on multiple levels. It has got to give you as much of what you love about the original show. Kurtwood Smith and Debra Jo Rupp do take care of most of it. It feels like the show never ended. They did not seem to need time to find the characters again. Through the run of the season, we are visited by Kelso, Jackie, Leo, Eric, Donna and Bob. The connections do help the show start and move on n its own direction. It helps that the show was revived by the original creators Bonnie, Lindsay, and Terry Turner. Any show coming back with the original creators help keep the vibe of a show.
The nostalgia is great, but what about the new kids? Can they carry on the torch, so to speak? It felt like we did not get the lightening in the bottle we got in the original. The chemistry did not feel like it was there in the beginning. There was an awkwardness to the beginning episodes that, did start to go away as they progressed.
As a show, it is worth a watch, especially if you are a fan of the original.
