Hereditary

As you know, I do not get the first look at movies. So when the early reviews for this movie called this "the scariest movie of the year", it colored me intrigued.
Annie (Toni Collette ) has just lost her mother. As she goes through her mother's things, she realizes the past does not always stay dead.
When it comes to horror in general, I very much love when it is not about the constant jump scares. This movie is very much about the slow burn. By the time you get to the end, it gets unnerving to say the least.
When it comes to a technical aspect of this movie, what stood out to me the most was how well the film was shot. When things start to descend into madness, the camera sucks you in, makes you feel like you are right there with them. That just sells the film even more.
The performances of the film were also something to talk about, especially in the case of Toni Collette. The character she plays requires someone to go through a large range of emotions from happy, to sad, to manic to scared. She nails this perfectly, without going over the top, which would have been easy to do.
One thing that I did not like, and really it is slight, is the ending. I did mention earlier that the horror, does slow burn all the way until the ending, and that is true. My problem, was when the plan was finally revealed, it was more of an "oh come on" that an "oh damn". Point being, I think it took it a little too far, with what they had been doing.
A24 has another great film to add to their impressive collection, but should we be surprised?
