Bad Hair
Image belongs to Hulu. This is something that I was curious to try and be able to review a movie about evil hair.
The story takes place in 1989, where a woman (Elle Lorraine), gets a weave in order to succeed. So Her exploding career, turns out, comes at cost because, evil hair.
The film is written and directed by Justin Simien. He is creator of the popular "Dear White People" series and film. So, as silly as the premise seems, one would expect something great from this.
This is one of those types of movies that can be seen in two different ways. There is the obvious, evil hair, What do we do? With movies like this tough, you are always looking for the secret meaning. This is a workplace drama. When it comes to workplace, especially thirty- one years ago, you come to workplace discrimination. What is the best way to put yourself above others? You obviously beautify yourself. After watching the film, does this metaphor work? Well, to be honest it kinda does not. In my opinion, it leans too much into the horror and undercuts the overall message.
If it goes to far into it's horror elements, does that make it scary? I think, that it does take a while for the horror to start but than cranks it. There are no jump scares, which is good. It is a complicated situation because I like the horror of the film but it does not fit the overall message, or go together.
This was a movie that could have gone over terribly, but it turned into something that ended up kinda eh. The kinda scares and comedy it has are fun, even if it does not really mesh the way it should.
