A Babysitter's Guide to Monster Hunting

A BABYSITTER'S GUIDE TO MONSTER HUNTING Trailer Is Pure Fun - Nerdist

The photo belongs to Netflix. I'm closing out the Halloween week with a fun family film.

Tamra Smart stars a Kelly, a teenager who  is recruited by a secret society. This society had to battle the Boogeyman and his monsters on Halloween.

The film is based off a book series that started in 2017 and is currently still expecting more. In my own personal taste, I usually can not stand a young adult adaptation. With the string of these adaptations hitting theaters over the last fifteen years, a good portion of them were horrible. How will this adaptation work?

The story is a lot of fun. Maybe, the trick to get something at least fun out of a young adult adaptation, is to get the original author to adapt their own work. The man in this case, is Joe Balarini. I think that if anything, he made it fun. I do sometimes have trouble with films  when it seems like I have seen something a million times. I am always told to look for the creative elements that could slightly differ a story that seems familiar. The use of a spy agency, bit as a tool to get over your fears, worked for me.

The acting in this film for the most part is solid enough for children. Tom Felton, who plays Grand Guignol, lays into it really thick. Watching it, the character does not seem to be too cartoonish. I do question the decision to play it that way. Could be that it is overacting?

This is a film that is in need of a moderate amount of effects. I can say that it comes out, ok at best. For example, the monsters and babysitter bombs look  fake. This is film, had a budget of thirty-five million which does seem high for a Netflix film. Saying that, thirty- five million dollars you must keep your effects in check.

In the end it is enjoyable, but has its issues. I will say it is a mighty improvement over many, and I do mean many other young adult adaptations. This could be why I grade this a little high.

GRADE: C+
