A Look Back: Silent Hill Revelation 3D
Photo is the property of Open Road Pictures. With my string of horror films, I thought why no take on a video game adaptation. How bad could it be?
The story picks up several years after the original, Heather Mason (Adelaide Clemens) and her father, Harry (Sean Bean), have been on the run. On the eve of Heather's 18th birthday, she discovers that she is not who she thinks she is.
Before we get into the negative, which, well is a lot, how about the positive. The monster design of the film are top notch. With there being a lot computer graphic imagery in this film, it is surprising how good they look.
Now, onto the bad side. The overall story is a mess from top to bottom. The overall story is supposed to be a direct sequel to the 2006 movie, The problem with this is writer MJ Basset wanted to coarse correct towards the game series. This does make the movies lack direction. The characters are very one dimensional, to the point where it is hard to get behind anyone. There are parts of the script, like the relationship between Vincent and Heather make no sense. Now, I will be the first to admit that I have never played a "Silent Hill" video game, but that is no excuse for your movie to make no sense.
Previously, I had mentioned the monsters and how great they looked. Once you get to the computer effects that is when it gets a little sad. The original had a budget of fifty million and the sequel gets less than half of this budget with twenty million. This is the problem with sequels, as we get more films we want more effects, more action. Things in this film that stand out are the very poor green screen and use of fire.
For a film that is about demons trying to kill you it really felt like everyone in the film was sleep walking their way trough it. This was a bit of a bummer considering we had just gotten the first season of "Game of Thrones". Both Sean Bean and Kit Harrington were far better in those roles.
In most cases the video game films are trash, unfortunately, this is no different. At least, as we know, video game movies do get better as the years have gone on.
