First Man

As October rages on, we come to the next big Oscar contender. In this day and age when people hear the name Damien Chazelle. His first two films, "Whiplash" and "LaLa Land" were critical masterpieces. The question is, will it continue his winning streak?
For those that don't know, "First Man" tells the story of Neil Armstrong (Ryan Gosling). The movie chronicles his journey to the moon (spoiler alert).
This movie is filled with great performances, lead by Ryan Gosling. His turn as Armstrong is one of strongest performances of the year. He was really able to convey this quiet, closed off man convincingly.
Something that really blew me away was how well it was shot. The film was shot nearly all hand held. It made it feel like you were there. Throughout my viewing of this film, I was looking for something to "wow" me. In Chazelle's previous films there was always something in those films that made them extraordinary for me. When it comes to "First Man", it was the moon landing. It is something hard to explain as to what it is. You must see it on the big screen though.
My biggest gripe with the movie is the character of Neil Armstrong. He is so closed off in this film, sometimes it's hard to feel like your really on this journey with him.
In the end, this is another win for Damien Chazelle. It should do well once Oscar season comes along.
